Better than radar?

The combination of
AIS transponder and a qualified
electronic chart system will show transponder equipped vessels on the chart image, like an ARPA target. Moreover, the transponder target also provides information about the ship's name, ship type, size, draught, cargo, position, speed, course, destination - and calculated collision risk.

Ships in radar shadow and far beyond radar range are visible. By use of landbased and satellite repeaters, transponder information range becomes global. It is possible to visualize the position and track of vessels from port to port.
